Adv. Ave Marea Babu was honoured to be invited as guest speaker for the Indian Constitution Day Celebration organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS), Unit No. 221, of Rajagiri Viswajyothi College of Arts & Applied Sciences (RVCAS) on 29 November 2025.

## Constitutional values in everyday life

The programme, titled on the NSS poster as a legal awareness session (niyamabodhavalkaranam) on the Dowry Prohibition Act and constitutional law, gave students a platform to discuss the significance of the Indian Constitution, the importance of constitutional values and the role of law in shaping a just, equal and responsible society.

Adv. Ave Marea Babu spoke about the importance of understanding one's legal rights, constitutional protections and responsibilities as citizens. The discussion introduced the fundamental principles of the Constitution, namely justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, and explained how they shape everyday life and protect individuals against discrimination and injustice.

## Key areas covered

- Constitutional awareness and Fundamental Rights: an introduction to the Constitution and the Fundamental Rights guaranteed under Part III, including equality before the law, freedom of expression, personal liberty, protection against discrimination and the constitutional remedies available when rights are violated.
- Fundamental Duties: the importance of the Fundamental Duties under Article 51A, and students' responsibilities to respect constitutional values, promote harmony and contribute positively to society.
- Dowry prohibition and women's legal protection: the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, which prohibits giving, taking and demanding dowry, the consequences of dowry-related offences, and the importance of challenging harmful social practices through legal awareness and collective responsibility.
- Equality, justice and social responsibility: the constitutional commitment to equality and social justice, including equal opportunity, dignity, non-discrimination and the protection of vulnerable sections of society.
- Legal literacy and access to justice: why awareness of the law is essential to protect individual rights and prevent exploitation, and encouragement to approach the appropriate legal authorities and use the remedies available when needed.

## Experience and contribution

The session was an enriching opportunity to share practical legal knowledge with young students and to show how constitutional principles and legal provisions work beyond textbooks. She encouraged students to understand the legal system better, question unlawful social practices and stand up for justice and equality.

The programme reinforced her commitment to promoting legal literacy, spreading awareness of constitutional rights and making legal knowledge accessible to the younger generation, and reflected the role legal professionals can play in society through education, awareness and community engagement.
